Connecting Histories

Afrodescendent and Jewish Communities in Multidirectional Memory Dialogue

Introduction

The MultiMemo project is a 2-year project funded by the European Commission that proposes an approach to remembrance underscoring the relevance of memory for social justice. The project initiates a variety of forms of active remembrance in the public sphere across several European countries, using the concept of ‘multidirectional memory.’

This term was coined by the scholar Michael Rothberg in his 2009 book Multidirectional Memory: Remembering the Holocaust in the Age of Decolonization as a way of conceptualising what happens when different histories of extreme violence confront each other in the public sphere. It refers to the idea that collective memories of different historical events or traumas (such as the Holocaust, slavery, colonialism, or genocide) do not exist in isolation from one another. Instead, these memories intersect, interact, and influence each other in complex ways.

Multimemo Dissemination Conference

This final MultiMemo conference will showcase the project activities and their results while applying the concept of multidirectional memory to the Belgian context by opening a dialogue between Jewish and Afrodescendant communities on topics such as cultural heritage, restitution post WWII and colonisation.
