On the basis of the legal requirements of the state of Baden-Württemberg, from the summer semester 2016 onwards, enrolments for the first semester of the teaching degree at the Heidelberg University of Jewish Studies will only take place in tiered degree programs with a Bachelor's/Master's degree structure (polyvalent two-subject (50%) Bachelor's degree program with teaching degree option and the planned Master of Education).

With this change, all students in the potentially teacher-relevant 50% Bachelor's degree programs at the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien and Heidelberg University will study in polyvalent (subject) Bachelor's degree programs, which will give them the opportunity to decide whether to pursue a subject Master's degree or a Master's degree in teaching during their Bachelor's degree program. The combination of the B.A. Jewish Studies 50% (teacher training option) with another 50% subject relevant to teacher training at Heidelberg University is required.

The curriculum of the polyvalent Bachelor's degree program introduces students to the basics of Jewish Studies, as does the Bachelor's degree program in Jewish Studies, with which the Bachelor's degree program with teacher training option shares most of its modules: students deal with the sources of Judaism, i.e. the sacred texts and their interpretation over time, with the history of the Jewish people, with Jewish philosophy, Jewish art and Jewish literature as well as the other sub-subjects. The difference to the Bachelor's degree course in Jewish Studies lies in the fact that students are specifically prepared for the tasks awaiting them as Jewish religious education teachers: this takes place through the educational science parts (for which the educational sciences at Heidelberg University are responsible) as well as through the didactic elements in the courses offered by the Chair of Jewish Religious Education and Didactics at the Heidelberg University of Jewish Studies.

The Bachelor's degree program in Jewish Studies 50% (teacher training option) qualifies students for further studies leading to a Master of Education or for further studies leading to a Master of Arts in Jewish Studies.

Admission requirements

Admission requirements for the course are a general higher education entrance qualification or a comparable qualification.

Good career opportunities

The new degree course brings undeniable advantages for Jewish communities as well as for future religious education teachers:

  • The course gives students the opportunity to make a decision during their Bachelor's degree towards a Master's degree in Jewish Studies or a Master's degree in Jewish Religious Education.
  • Jewish religious education teachers in the civil service relieve the burden on Jewish communities and enable them to draw on qualified teaching staff.
  • Jewish religious education teachers with civil servant status have a secure employment relationship and a better standing in the school and among the teaching staff.
  • The growth of the Jewish community in Germany contrasts with a growing shortage of qualified Jewish teachers. The career opportunities for qualified teachers are therefore excellent.

Bachelor's phase

The Bachelor's phase with the option of teaching at grammar schools (6 semesters, 180 ECTS credits) takes place at the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien and Heidelberg University. There is a connection to the Master of Education with the profile of teaching at grammar schools.

The 20 credit points for General Competencies (ÜK), which are available in every Bachelor's degree program, are filled with the elements of the teacher training option. The teaching degree option is regulated by the framework regulation for the teaching degree option in the Bachelor's degree programs at Heidelberg University.

Teacher training option

The so-called teacher training option consists of a range of courses in educational science and didactics as well as two career-oriented internships worth a total of 20 ECTS credits. They replace the general competencies (ÜK) prescribed for the Bachelor's degree programs and are one of the requirements for admission to the Master's degree program leading to the Master of Education (M.Ed.).

Detailed information can be found in the curricula and module handbooks. The Examinations Officeprovides information on examinations and examination regulations (as well as examination regulations from previous semesters). The Student Advisory is also available to answer any further questions you may have.

The following elements of the teacher training option are offered under the responsibility of Educational Sciences

  • Introduction to school pedagogy (3 ECTS credits)
  • Introduction to Educational Psychology (3 ECTS credits)
  • Basic module in educational sciences (4 ECTS credits)
  • 3-week career-oriented internship (BOP) 1 (3 ECTS credits)
  • 3-week career-oriented internship (BOP) 2 (3 ECTS credits)

The career-oriented internships are part of the Bachelor's phase and are accompanied by educational science (cf. Section 6 (9) sentence 4 RahmenVO-KM). They cannot be completed before the start of the degree program. Orientation internships that were completed before the degree course can therefore not be recognized.

Advice on the educational science elements of the teaching degree option is offered by the advisors at the Institute of Educational Science at Heidelberg University.

The following elements of the teacher training option are offered under the responsibility of the subjects - in the Jewish Religious Education degree program under the responsibility of the Chair of Jewish Religious Education and Didactics

  • Subject-specific didactics modules worth 2 ECTS credits per subject

Course of study

The following course of study is planned for a Bachelor's degree course with a teaching degree option (see orange box in the diagram):

Explanations to the graphic

  • BOP - Vocational orientation practical phase (in school or education-related institution). The two 3-week BOPs should take place in an educational institution, one of the two BOPs must be completed in a school.
  • BIWI - Educational Sciences
  • (a ) The study elements of subject-specific science, subject-specific didactics and internship accompanied by educational science are each assigned to one semester track so that cooperation projects can be generated. BOP 1 corresponds in type and scope to the requirements for the orientation internship in Section 6 (11) RahmenVO-KM.
  • (b ) The credit points for subject didactics, educational science and work placements correspond to the 20 CP of the practical course in all BA degree programs.
