Erasmus + (ECHE)
As a holder of a European University Charter, the Heidelberg University of Jewish Studies (HfJS) participates in the EU’s ERASMUS+ education program (2021–2027) in the “Higher Education” category.
Graz (Austria)
The HfJS currently has an Erasmus exchange agreement with the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz (KFU) as part of the joint degree M.A. “Jewish Studies - History of Jewish Cultures”. The Erasmus-funding supports the semester abroad at the partner university in Graz, which is mandatory for this degree program.

Innsbruck (Austria)
Since November 2023, lecturers at the HfJS have the opportunity to spend time teaching at the Institute of Linguistics at the University of Innsbruck.
Salzburg (Austria)
Students at the HfJS can apply to spend a semester abroad at the Center for Jewish Cultural History at the University of Salzburg.
Academic staff at the HfJS have the opportunity to undertake a funded research, internship, or teaching assignment there.

Vienna (Austria)
Lecturers and staff at the HfJS can apply for a stay abroad at the University of Vienna as part of their teaching duties (at the Department of Jewish Studies at the University of Vienna) or for an internship (in various departments).

In addition, students enrolled in a master’s program at the HfJS can apply to spend a semester abroad at Central European University (CEU) in Vienna.
Academic staff at the HfJS have the opportunity to undertake a funded research, internship, or teaching assignment there.
ERASMUS+ through the University of Heidelberg
Furthermore, HfJS students also have access to the KA171 funding line of the ERASMUS+ program through the dual enrollment regulation with Heidelberg University, including our partner universities in Israel, e.g. the Hebrew University (HUJI) in Jerusalem.
Additional Funding for Participants with Limited Opportunities
The following groups of people may apply for a supplementary grant for participants with fewer opportunities (Social Top-Up):
• Students with a GdB of 20 or higher or a documented disability or chronic illness that results in additional financial needs
• Students who are studying abroad with children
• First-generation college students (students from non-academic families)
• Working students (this option will no longer be available starting in the 2026/27 academic year)
The amount is 250 euros per month (8.33 euros per day) for the same period as the Erasmus grant.
Specific conditions and application deadlines will be announced in a timely manner. Students with a disability or chronic illness, as well as students who take their child(ren) abroad, may submit their application for a Social Top-Up in consultation with the central Erasmus Office at a later date before the start of their mobility period if they only meet the eligibility requirements after the deadlines have passed, or they may apply for funding to cover actual expenses.
