Vernissage of the exhibition "Library of Lost Books"

History of the Jewish people

We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition "Library of Lost Books".

The program is as follows:

  • Welcome (Prof. Werner Arnold, former Rector of the HfJS)
  • Report on the search for Nazi-looted property at the HfJS (Philipp Zschommler, HfJS)
  • Presentation of the project "Library of Lost Books" (Kinga Bloch, LBI London)
  • Insight into the cooperation project with the Elisabeth-von-Thadden-Schule (two students report)
  • Lecture: "Literature research at a dead end: Rabb. Regina Jonas and Debora" (Rabb. Prof. Dr. Birgit Klein, HfJS)
  • Reception in the canteen of the HfJS

The Grimme Online Award-winning project "Library of Lost Books" presents the history of the Berlin Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums, which was dissolved by the National Socialists in 1942, in an innovative format on its multi-media platform(libraryoflostbooks.com/en/). In particular, it sheds light on the people who were associated with the university and combines various elements to paint a vivid picture of one of the most influential German-Jewish institutions.

A citizen science approach is intended to virtually restore the stolen library. To this end, all books that can be traced in the library's holdings will be recorded in a database. Some of these books, which are now scattered around the world, have been identified in various libraries and are helping to reconstruct the original collection. In the course of provenance research at the Heidelberg University of Jewish Studies, books from the Berlin university were also found and form the starting point for the project and the traveling exhibition "Library of Lost Books".

We kindly ask you to register.
