Master of Education (Teaching Degree for Grammar Schools)
Aim of the Degree Program
The degree program enables students to further their academic education in Jewish religion, history and culture from antiquity to today's trends and lifeworlds and at the same time prepare themselves for the teaching profession with didactic and pedagogical skills in independent modules and in a school internship. The Master of Education, Teaching Qualification for Grammar Schools, requires a B.A. 50% Jewish Studies with Teaching Option (or equivalent qualifications).
The M.Ed. Jewish Religious Studies, Teaching Qualification for Grammar Schools, consists of the subject Jewish Religious Studies with its subject didactics and another subject with its subject didactics, the educational sciences, the Master's thesis and the practical school semester. It prepares students for the teaching profession for Jewish religious education at grammar schools and is therefore primarily intended for students who can teach religious education on behalf of and with the approval of the state associations of the Jewish or Israelite (religious) communities in accordance with Basic Law Art. 7, Para. 3 after passing the state examination.
The additional subject is selected by the students. Other subjects and the educational sciences are offered and taught by cooperating universities within the framework of course-related university cooperations in accordance with the corresponding examination regulations of these universities.
Furthermore, the subject Jewish Religious Studies, Teaching Qualification for Grammar Schools, can be studied as an extension subject with 120 or 90 credit points (for details see there).
The M.Ed. in Jewish Religious Studies prepares students for teaching at lower and upper secondary level.
The M.Ed Jewish Religious Studies for the teaching profession Gymnasium is consecutive and requires a Bachelor's degree in Jewish Studies 50% with a teaching option or an equivalent degree. In particular, this includes knowledge of Hebrew to the extent of the Hebraicum of the Heidelberg University of Jewish Studies as well as knowledge of the Bible and rabbinical literature to the extent of the basic courses (Mechinot) of the University of Jewish Studies.

"Judaism" is not adequately described by the common term "religion", as it is also understood as a specification of a school subject (religious education). The subject of Jewish Studies, as it is taught at the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien, therefore offers a wide range of Jewish lifeworlds, from the history of the Jewish people to the Bible and Talmud, philosophy, literature and linguistics to Jewish art. Students aiming for a Master of Education can put together their studies from this range in order to study "Judaism" in all its diversity. In this way, they prepare themselves for the teaching profession in Jewish religious education with a broad range of subjects.
The standard period of study for the Master's degree course as the first degree is four semesters, including the time for the practical semester at school and the completion of the Master's thesis.
The total number of credit points required to successfully complete the Master's degree program as a first M.Ed. degree in the compulsory and elective (compulsory) areas is 120 credit points. The program has a modular structure.
After passing the Master's examination, the Heidelberg University of Jewish Studies awards the academic degree "Master of Education" (abbreviated to M.Ed.).
The 120 credit points of the first M.Ed. degree comprise
- 18 CP in subject-specific studies in each of the two subjects
- 13 CP in subject didactics in each of the two subjects
- 27 CP in educational science
- 16 CP practical school semester
- 15 CP Master's thesis
