M.A. Jewish Studies (major subject, minor subject)
Aim of the Degree Program
Jewish studies is a humanities discipline and as such is committed to the goal of reflecting on the cultural foundations of society on both a large and small scale. The task of the humanities scholar is primarily to understand, explain and ultimately to mediate: between groups, to people, into society. These processes require a precise methodological foundation and a progressive, content-critical accompaniment with competence for the basics, a sense for detail and an eye for the whole in its peculiarity and in its context. As a European competence center in this field, the University of Jewish Studies offers opportunities for in-depth study and penetration that are not available elsewhere and is therefore particularly attractive for students who are aiming for a Master's degree in Jewish Studies.
Admission requirements for studying the major subject is the general higher education entrance qualification or a comparable qualification, as well as a completed Bachelor's degree in Jewish Studies with a subject component of at least 50% or in degree programs with essentially the same content. In the main subject, 100 credit points are completed at the HfJS and 20 credit points in the accompanying subject at Heidelberg University. Further details are regulated by the admission regulations and the examination regulations for the M.A. Jewish Studies. Admission to the consecutive Master's degree program is restricted. An application is required before the application for enrolment can be submitted.
Admission requirements for studying the minor subject is the general higher education entrance qualification or a comparable qualification, as well as a completed Bachelor's degree in a humanities, cultural or social science, including theology or law, or in Jewish studies. In the accompanying subject, 20 credit points are completed at the HfJS and 100 credit points in the main subject at Heidelberg University. Please also note the admission regulations and the examination regulations. The application is made for the main subject at Heidelberg University. With the letter of admission from Heidelberg University for the major subject, an application for enrollment in the minor subject can be submitted to the HfJS.

Jewish life is not limited to religious rites, but encompasses all areas of human existence. The subject intersects with all areas of the humanities and beyond. Accordingly, the University of Jewish Studies offers several sub-subjects, ranging from the history of the Jewish people, the Bible and Talmud, philosophy, literature and linguistics to Jewish art. In this way, Jewish Studies at the University of Jewish Studies provides a comprehensive picture of Jewish life in Germany, Europe and the world, past and present.
The academic degree of Master of Arts obtained on completion of the course qualifies students for further doctoral studies, but also enables them to enter the profession directly at other academic institutions and service providers such as museums, memorials, print, online and broadcast media or other institutions that require the relevant skills.
