Acquisition of the estate of Tovia Ben-Chorin

Press Release

Shortly before Passover, Antiquariat Heckenhauer from Tübingen enriched our library with the book collection of Tovia Ben-Chorin. The "German Jew from Israel" last lived in St. Gallen, where he worked as a rabbi and was involved in both Christian-Jewish and Israeli-Palestinian dialog. When he died in 2022, his heirs tried to find a suitable place for his extensive book collection. However, these attempts failed before first Roger Sonnewald from Tübingen and now our own library acquired the collection.

While Tovia's father, the journalist and religious scholar Shalom Ben-Chorin, was already committed to Jewish-Christian understanding, Tovia is sympathetically quoted as saying: "I love the atheists because they really wrestle with God. The ones who are so sure, I sometimes have my doubts"

Among the books, of which about 45% are in English, 40% in Hebrew and about 15% in German, there are many working copies by Tovia Ben-Chorin, some with dedications, some with notes and letters to his father, some also by his father Schalom Ben-Chorin.

We are excited and look forward to browsing through them for the first time.
